Volunteer

Still Someone relies on volunteers to craft shawls and afghans, distribute items to their local nursing homes, and nominate seniors who live at home or at the home of a family member to receive a shawl, afghan, blanket, or card.

No one at Still Someone is paid for their involvement. All crafters, administrators, and distributors are volunteers.

Sign (or Design) a Card

A personally signed greeting card can mean a lot to a senior. Our goal is to include enough cards for each resident of the nursing home along with blanket shipments. This can mean a lot of cards!

Handmade or store-bought cards are acceptable. Artwork by kids is especially welcome.

We do not send greeting cards that are religious, but we do accept both seasonal and general cards. Please feel free to write a message in your card, for example:
  • "I was just thinking about you today"
  • "Although we may be strangers from far away, we have you in our thoughts."
  • "I wish you all the best."
  • "I hope you have a good day"
  • "Just a quick note to say Hello"

You may sign your card however you feel comfortable:
  • First name
  • First name and last initial
  • Complete name
  • "A friend at Still Someone"
  • Some card signers like to include the state or city they live in

Unsigned cards are also appreciated! We always need cards for volunteers to sign.

We read each card to make sure it is appropriate to send, so please do not put the cards in sealed envelopes.

Please send cards to:

Craft a Shawl or Afghan

When you create a a shawl or afghan for Still Someone you know that every stitch you make will help warm a senior or brighten up a nursing home room.

Because of allergy and comfort issues, each shawl, stole, lap blanket, or afghan you make should be:
  • Made out of a soft, synthetic or cotton, machine-washable fiber or fabric
  • Include a label listing the type (contents or brand name) of fiber or fabric used and care instructions
  • Age-appropriate -- please avoid juvenile themes and images

Your comfort item can be any size! Large afghans are great to decorate hospital beds and wrap up in on cold days, but even a 1'x2' rectangle can keep someone's lap warm, provide modesty when in pajamas, brighten up the arm of a chair, or give fidgety fingers something to pull on.

Lap blankets are probably the most popular comfort garment we distribute, especially the tied fleece variety. Lap blankets are about 24"x36". One yard of fleece makes a perfectly sized blanket, and good buys can often be found in fabric stores' remnant bins.

Donated items that do not meet these criteria may be sold to defray operational costs.

Please send completed shawls and afghans to:

       Still Someone, Inc.
       PO Box 543
       Upper Sandusky, OH
       43351

Don't forget to print and include a label with your comfort garment!

If you have any questions, please email contact@stillsomeone.org

Distribute Items

We supply the completed shawls and afghans -- you provide a personal visit to your local nursing home.

If you are interested in working directly with the seniors who receive our comfort items, please email contact@stillsomeone.org.

Tell Us About a Senior

If you know of a senior who does not live in a nursing home but would benefit from a comfort shawl or afghan, please email contact@stillsomeone.org. For the privacy and protection of the recipient, gifts to seniors that do not live in nursing homes will be mailed rather than personally delivered.
